Discover the unique culture of Southern India on a four-night trip to the cities of Hyderabad, Cochin and Kumarakom.
From Mumbai, fly to the southeastern coast of India to Hyderabad, once the princely state controlled for centuries by the powerful Nizams. Check-in at Falaknuma Palace, an exact replica of England's Windsor Palace, and once the royal guest house of Nizam Mehboob Ali Khan. Venture into the city and be introduced to the history and significance of Hyderabad's most iconic monuments: from the square Charminar Mosque built in 1591 to the vibrant Lad Bazaar, renowned for his glistening pearls, lacquer bangles and exquisite textiles. Experience the city's distinctive culture and flavorful cuisine, an aromatic blend of South Indian Mughal and Persian influences. Visit the Salarjung Museum, the life-long passion of the Prime Minister of the city from 1899 to 1949. It boasts a priceless collection of antiques with significant emphasis on Mughal jade, miniature paintings and countless clocks. Complete your day in Hyderabad with a signature dinner of Hyderabadi Cuisine, characterized by its use of coconut, tamarind and a fusion of Mughal and Telegana traditions.
The next morning, enjoy a morning at leisure at Falaknuma Palace or venture out to the Bazaar for some legendary Basra pearl shopping before flying to Cochin, located on the southwest coast of India in the state of Kerala. For centuries, this seaside city was of strategic importance for nations including Britain, China, The Netherlands and Portugal. The amalgamation of various cultural influences is reflected throughout its architecture. Spend an afternoon sightseeing with tours of the Church of St. Francis, the first European church in India where Vasco de Gama was buried in 1524. Visit a Jewish settlement and synagogue built in 1568 that features Chinese tiling, Belgian chandeliers and holds the ancient scrolls of the Old Testament. Other stops include Mattancherry Palace, the Dutch Palace, built by the Portugese in 1555, along with the city's excellent furniture and antique markets. By evening, witness a performance of the three-thousand-year-old choreographed martial art dance known as Kalaripayattu, then experience a taste of local Keralan cuisine with a seafood dinner. Transfer to Kumarakom the next morning with a stop at the local Coir factories, that manufacture fine coconut husk products.
On the emerald banks of Lake Vembanad stands Kumarakom, an approximate two-hour drive from Cochin. This tropical haven for nature and wildlife enthusiasts is a relaxing oasis after many days of travel. Cruise down the backwaters at sunset and observe a variety of flora and fauna at Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary.
The next day, enjoy morning at leisure, or rejuvenate with a variety of ayurvedic treatments in the spa. Board a private houseboat for a cruise along Allepey, known as the Venice of the East. Toast to India with a champagne lunch on board. Later, learn about the influences and history behind Kerala's tantalizing cuisine in a signature cooking lesson.
